Housing Assistance for Renters

Start with the DCAid Screening Tool

DCAid is a great place to start. Learn more about this tool, which can help with housing assistance programs, utility assistance programs, homelessness prevention services, and other programs.

Homeless Prevention Program

This program provides up to three months of assistance to pay past-due rent to households in imminent danger of eviction due to temporary financial problems beyond their control. To learn more, contact the office in your area.

Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program assists low-income households by paying a portion of the monthly rent directly to the landlord.

It only accepts applicants during Open Enrollment periods. Waitlist openings are posted here. Several municipal and county authorities administer Section 8 existing housing programs throughout the state. For further information, contact the local county field office or call the NJ Department of Community Affairs at 609-292-4080.

Housing Resources and Support

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program coordinates housing assistance and provides resources to enable assisted families to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Participation generally lasts five years. For additional information, call 609-292-3846.
